HOLY ORDERS AND DISCERNMENT TO RELIGIOUS LIFE

Discernment basically means “hearing the call” and trying to figure out where God might be calling you to serve Him. It is a life-long process of growth and listening to how God moves the heart in a new way of service. It begins in one’s heart – but it also involves other people, especially in the Church.

In the simplest terms, “vocation” means a “call.” In general terms your vocation is what God calls you to do with your life. Everyone is called to know, love and serve God in this life, in order to be happy with him forever in heaven. Yet each one does this in a different, individual vocation such as marriage, vowed religious life, lay ecclesial ministry, or Holy Orders. Ultimately discovering your vocation is a decision made through prayer, but also requires one to make an informed decision and seek advice from trusted friends, family and spiritual leaders.
