WHY SHOULD WE RECYCLE?

God entrusted us with the earth and its resources.  Recycling, repairing and reusing our resources are ways to take care of God’s earth.
 

WHAT CAN BE RECYCLED AT CURBSIDE

Paper, newspapers, envelopes, cardboard, food and beverage cans, plastic bottles and containers with a #1 or #2 on the bottom, magazines, catalogs, glass bottles and jars, phone books (in season), pie pans and foil.
 

 DROP-OFF SITES IN NEWPORT NEWS FOR THOSE WHO DO NOT HAVE CURBSIDE RECYCLING—FOR THE SAME ITEMS AS ABOVE:

  • Main Street Library Parking Lot   110 Main Street, Newport News—Open 24 hours

  • Briarfield Fire Station #7   5844 Marshall Ave., Newport News—Open 24 hours

  • Hidenwood Fire Station #10   12455 Warwick Blvd., Newport News—Open 24 hours

  • Oyster Point Fire Station #6   685 Oyster Point Road, Newport News—Open 24 hours

  • Fire Station #4   13561 Jefferson Ave., Newport News—Open 24 hours

  • Residential Waste Drop-off and Compost Facility     550 Atkinson Way, Newport News         Open 8:00 a.m.—4:00 p.m., Monday –Saturday
     

DROP-OFF SITE FOR HAMPTON RESIDENTS WHO DO NOT HAVE CURBSIDE RECYCLING—FOR THE SAME ITEMS AS ABOVE: 

Newport News drop-off sites can be used.

 WHAT ELSE CAN BE RECYCLED? 

Athletic Shoes—Nike Factory Store, 5699-44B Richmond Road, Suite 16B, Williamsburg 23188 at the Prime Outlets (#74 Prime Outlet map)—565-2963.

Batteries (household)—city/county household chemical collections and any Batteries Plus or Home Depot store.

Building Materials (doors, windows, hardware, etc.)—Habitat for Humanity ReStore, 9614 Warwick Blvd., Newport News.  Call 246-4955 for information.

Compact Fluorescent Bulbs (CFL’s) in any condition—city/county household chemical collections.

Compact Fluorescent Bulbs (only unbroken)—Home Depot Stores.

Plastic bags—all Wal-Mart stores and many grocery stores.  Plus, Wal-Mart gives a free cloth bag for every full bag of plastic bags.

Ink Cartridges—Office Depot and Office Max stores give credit awards for these.  Ask stores for details.

Lids and Caps—Aveda at 300 Monticello Ave., #171, Norfolk  23570 at McArthur Mall.  Call 622-2412 for details.

Televisions (working)—most thrift shops.

Televisions (working/non-working) and electronics for a fee, at ARC of the Peninsula, 2520 58th St., Hampton—896-8463 or www.arcvap.org.
