Christmas Schedule 2017

Monsignor Lane, the Diocesan Administrator, asked that the following information be forward to all parishes. It was emailed to priests, deacons, seminarians, parishes, and campus ministries on September 29, 2017.

This year Christmas falls on a Monday, with the 4th Sunday of Advent on the previous day. The faithful should know that there exists the obligation to attend Mass for the 4th Sunday of Advent, and too, a separate obligation to attend Mass for Christmas (The Nativity of the Lord). To satisfy both obligations, a Catholic must attend two separate Masses.

A Catholic may satisfy the obligation for the 4th Sunday of Advent by attending an anticipated Mass (Vigil Mass) on Saturday evening, December 23rd OR attending Mass any time on Sunday, December 24th (including a Christmas Eve Mass). A Catholic, though, would also need to attend an additional Mass on either Sunday, December 24th or Monday, December 25th to satisfy the obligation for the Christmas Holy Day.

Because of the pastoral demands on the priests and other ministers, as well as the need to prepare the church space for the celebration of Christmas, parishes may choose to alter their Mass schedule for the 4th Sunday of Advent.

Please note, at Immaculate Conception, to prepare for the celebration of Christmas, there is NO 11:00 am Mass on Sunday, December 24th. The Mass schedule is as follows:

Fourth Sunday of Advent

  • Saturday, December 23rd at 5:30 pm
  • Sunday, December 24th at 8:30 am

Christmas Eve & Christmas Day

  • Sunday, December 24th at 4:00 pm and 7:00 pm (Christmas Eve Mass)
  • Monday, December 25th at 10:00 am (Christmas Day Mass)
  • Saturday & Sunday, December 30 & 31st follows our normal, weekend Mass schedule.

There is no Mass on Monday, January 1st, as it is NOT a holy day of obligation this year.
